The doctrine of the Incarnation lies at the heart of Christianity. But the idea that 'God was in Christ' has become a much-debated topic in modern theology. Oliver Crisp addresses six key issues in the Incarnation defending a robust version of the doctrine, in keeping with classical Christology. He explores perichoresis, or interpenetration, with reference to both the Incarnation and Trinity. Over two chapters Crisp deals with the human nature of Christ and then provides an argument against the view, common amongst some contemporary theologians, that Christ had a fallen human nature. He considers the notion of divine kenosis or self-emptying, and discusses non-Incarnational Christology, focusing on the work of John Hick. This view denies Christ is God Incarnate, regarding him as primarily a moral exemplar to be imitated. Crisp rejects this alternative account of the nature of Christology.

Toute sa vie, Proudhon fut hanté par la figure de Jésus. Les allusions au Nazaréen, fréquentes dans sa correspondance et dans ses Carnets, sont présentes jusque dans ses œuvres consacrées aux questions économiques, sociales et politiques. Mais on rencontre surtout cette attention à Jésus dans beaucoup de ses écrits publiés ou encore inédits. Dès 1839, alors qu'il a trente ans, Proudhon annote les épreuves d'une bible qu'il corrigeait pour le compte d'un imprimeur à Besançon. Il continuera d'y déposer ses remarques jusqu'à ses derniers jours. Il écrira que ses " vrais maîtres " furent " la Bible d'abord, Adam Smith ensuite, et enfin Hegel ". On trouve de longs développements sur Jésus dans les œuvres éditées avant sa mort, en particulier dans De la justice dans la Révolution et dans l'Eglise, et dans les ouvrages ébauchés qui ne furent publiés qu'après son décès, en particulier Jésus et les Origines du christianisme. Ces textes - parfois des brouillons - présentent des variations considérables : on y retrouve la vitalité de sa pensée et de son écriture. Critique de Strauss et de Renan, Proudhon présente une figure de Jésus très originale dans l'éventail des Jésus du XIXe siècle. Il a formé le néologisme " messianose ", par analogie avec " apothéose ", pour désigner la fabrication sociale du Messie : dans la palette des messianismes, Jésus selon Proudhon présente un cas extrême car il est fait Messie parce qu'il était un anti-Messie. L'étude de l'ensemble de ces textes, cités dans cet ouvrage, fait découvrir que Proudhon fut un pionnier en sociologie des religions, en même temps qu'un exégète, un historien et un philosophe de l'histoire. Étrangement, les études sur les positions de Proudhon par rapport à Dieu et à la religion ont donné peu de place à la présence de Jésus dans son œuvre. Ce livre voudrait combler cette lacune.

One famous target of Progressive Era attempts to rein in monopolistic big business was the eastern Sugar Trust. Less known is how federal regulators also tried to break monopoly control over beet sugar in the West by going after the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, a business supported and controlled by the Latter-day Saints church and run by Mormon authorities.
